Spot Guide
The Wave
Fast. Hollow. Unforgiving.
Cokes is a lightning-quick right-hand reef break off the northern tip of Thulusdhoo. Out of deep water, the swell hits a shallow reef shelf and immediately stands up into a steep, pitching take-off. Two distinct barrel sections define the ride: a heavy outside section that throws hard and fast, and an even shallower inside that links up for a second tube if you carry enough speed. The exit is tight — time your paddle back through the keyhole.
Type
Right-hand reef
Level
Intermediate – Expert
Ideal Size
1.5 – 2.5 m
Bottom
Shallow coral reef
Named After
The old Coca-Cola bottling factory still visible from the lineup on Thulusdhoo — one of the most recognisable landmarks in Maldivian surfing.
Swell
S – SSE · 164°
South swell wraps perfectly around the atoll. 14 s+ period unlocks the barrels. 16 s is ideal. Consistent from April through October.
Wind
NW Offshore
Northwest wind blows directly offshore, grooming the face. 5–15 km/h ideal. Cross-shore from north is still workable. SW onshore ruins it.
Tide
Mid → High
Rising mid-to-high is the sweet spot — current eases and sections connect. Low tide exposes the reef and makes the current brutal.
Season
Apr – Oct
SW monsoon drives the most consistent groundswells. Peak May–Aug. Shoulder months offer lighter crowds with still-solid surf.
Hazards
Shallow reef
Reef boots strongly recommended. The inside section is very shallow at low tide.
Strong current
Channel current can be fierce on bigger swells and tide changes. Know your exit before paddling out.
Sea urchins
Dense colony around the keyhole entry. Time your paddle-out carefully, especially on the return.
Crowd factor
Cokes is a swell magnet — on smaller days it draws every surfer in the atoll. Go early.
Getting There
From Velāna Airport
45-min public ferry from Malé ferry terminal, or ~30-min speedboat. Ferries run twice daily.
Paddle out
Direct paddle from the northern beach on small-to-medium days. Watch the current when it's big.
Dinghy transfer
Local surf camps run daily transfers. Recommended on bigger swells for a controlled drop into the line-up.
Gear checklist
Reef boots, antiseptic first-aid kit, spare leash. Board rentals available locally.
Nearby Breaks
Chickens
World-class left just across the channel. Rides up to 500 m. 30-second boat hop from Cokes. Great option for goofies.
Jailbreaks
Long right off Himmasfushi. Less consequential than Cokes — deeper reef, longer walls, less crowd pressure.
Sultans
World-class right near Pasta Point. Punchy walls, tube rides, gnarly current — but friendlier reef than Cokes.
Honky's
Long left past Sultans. Often the least crowded option in the atoll. Longer rides than its right-hand neighbour.
